The Difference Between Generation Z and Baby Boomers
The current society is composed of diverse groups with different social, economic and political habits. These groups possess different consumption habits, diverse dress codes, and different social interests. Some of the groups that will be discussed in this article are generation Z and baby boomers. Generation Z is individuals who were born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s while baby boomers are people who were born between 1946 and 1945 while. The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the differences between generation Z and the baby boomers.
Generation Z is a group of individuals who were born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. They are primarily children of generation X but could also have parents who are millennials. This generation is constantly under criticism for their laziness, ‘know-it-all’ and unawareness and they normally think that the world owes them everything. Generation Z, just like other generations has positive qualities. Individuals in this generation are always realistic, private and entrepreneurial. They are good at multitasking and they are tech savvy (Wood, 2013). In contrast to baby boomers, generation Z respond digital marketing tactics. Traditional marketing does not work for them.
Baby boomers were christened the name as a result of numerous babies that were born during that time. It has played a significant role in role in the American economy due to its large number. The generation went through hard times during their lifespan since America was being torn by Vietnam War and civil rights movements. Due to the tough conditions, most baby boomers were shaped into leadership positions and business. This generation was brought up when there was high optimism and prosperity and it was motivated by the fact that it was a special generation that was able to change the world and equated work with self-worth, personal aggrandizement and contribution (Wiedmer, 2015). Baby boomers possess numerous positive attributes as compared to generation Z. Individuals of this generation believe that it is only through hard work and sacrifice that one can gain respect. This is the group that formed the workaholic movement and worked and made decisions as a team.
The conflict between the two generations is inevitable. The two groups view matters of all topics differently. Generation Z responds to edgy and visual marketing tactics hence any product that is marketed through traditional means would capture the attention of only a few individuals in this generation. Interestingly, baby boomers are more into traditional marketing styles and they barely pay attention to the modern styles of marketing. There is a huge difference in media consumption habits of generation z and baby boomers. Generation Z is a heavy media users and they spend most of their times on social media or playing video games. In contrast, only very few baby boomers are using social media services.
In summary, there is a very big difference between baby boomers and generation Z in relation to their consumption habits, opinions, interests and their view of life. Individuals in generation Z are tech-savvy and spend most of their times on social media while baby boomers are more into work and they believe that it is only through hard work that one can gain respect. The distinctions in the characteristics of baby boomers and generation Z is mainly attributed to different economic and political situations of two generations.
